Tobacco History

Tobacco entered Indonesia in the 17th century through Portuguese and Dutch traders. It was first cultivated in Deli, North Sumatra, by the Dutch in the 19th century for export to Europe. Over time, tobacco spread to various regions such as Java, Madura, and Lombok, becoming an important commodity in trade and the kretek cigarette industry.
